I've been playing it on Android for about 3 years now (shortly before Whacking Day, which according to the Wiki was in April 2013). I love it. I was an original Simpsons fan since the Tracy Ullman days. Sadly, I have not watched the show in years (in my mind, it ended on an up note about 10 years ago), but still have fond memories of when I used to watch it every week. I have the DVD sets of the first few seasons too (6 or 7, I believe).
I think the game captures the spirit of the show perfectly. The main cast (The Simpson family themselves, plus Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria) all provide voices for all of their characters, and most (all?) of it is new, not sound clips from the show. The other characters are silent though.
It's a freemium game, but I've never paid a cent, and I have lots of premium items and characters that I have purchases using donuts (the game's premium currency) earned through the game itself. The game used to be pretty stingy with free donuts, but there are now quite a few ways to earn them.
One of the things I love about the game are the events, which happen quite often. Christmas and Halloween are usually big, with lots of things to do. Sometimes it's stressful trying to complete all the tasks before the event ends, but I almost always manage it, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment. The events always contain exclusive characters and items, which are fun to have.
In fact, the Monorail event and Christmas 2015 (the Maggie update) both added new ways to earn donuts. You can earn 5 per week by building monorail track, and you can earn up to 3 donuts every 3 days by playing find Maggie.
There are often in-game sales on premium items too, and I've bought many of my premium characters at a discount by taking advantage of these sales, which stretches the value of donuts even further.
One of my recent purchases was Barney, who finally went on sale. Normally he costs 250 donuts, but during the Space event (which ends today), he was on sale for 120 donuts, and even included an extra outfit. I had been really close to buying him at full price, and I was so glad I waited. He's kind of been my white whale, and I'm glad I finally got him.
One great resource for information about the game is The Simpsons Tapped Out Addicts. I go there during every event to get more information. Sometimes the events are a little confusing at the start, so it's nice to get some tips (I usually wait a little while though, as I don't want everything to be spoiled). Often during events there are items you have to collect to win prizes. One of their most helpful posts is during every event they post a calendar to show how many items you should have on each day to get all the prizes.
As a Simpsons fan (even a lapsed one), I love the game. I think non Simpsons fans wouldn't really get it though, since for me it's about the characters and the humor and charm of the show.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-71816841125105396102016-02-01T20:40:00.002-08:002016-02-01T20:50:29.874-08:00Groundhog Day, 2016Well, it's that time of year again. The one day a year this site gets any traffic. Let's see, what's happened here since I last posted...
Ugh! 2012! Really? Geez, it's already Leap Year again. I better generate some content here.
So, what's been going on in the last 4 years? Too much for one post, so maybe there will be a few more in the next couple of days/weeks/months.
Let's see:

Same job

Same house (remodeled the kitchen though)

Graduated with a BS in Computer Science

Went to Disneyland a lot

Went to Disney World (twice!)

Saw some movies (apparently there's a new Star Wars movie. Actually, that's one of the 3 or 4 movies I've actually seen in a theater in the last 4 years).

Played a lot of games on my PC

Played a lot of games on my phone (I am addicted to Simpsons Tapped Out)

Read a few books.

Watched TV on the TV

Watched TV on Netflix while running (Ended up watching all of Doctor Who through Matt Smith, then the first 2 seasons of Arrow, now watching Clone Wars)

Got a dog

Bought a lot of twisty puzzles (Rubik's Cube type puzzles)

Bought a lot of Transformers

Bought a lot of Legos

Ran a few 5Ks

Subscribed to Loot Crate

Read a lot of comic books

Watched YouTube a lot

Umm... that's about it really.

Look for posts soon about some of these topics. I'm thinking about more musings about video games (such as what I'm currently playing and what I'm looking forward to), discussions about Disneyland and Disney World (loved Disney World!), and other stuff. We'll see.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-74220287765920115782012-03-29T13:22:00.002-07:002012-03-29T13:29:39.861-07:00Starting the next seriesI finished the final episode of Battlestar Galactica last week. I watched the entire series on the treadmill using my iPod Touch.
I recently ordered an iPad, and it arrived on Monday, so I got to start my next series on a larger screen.
Watching TV on the iPad while running is nice because the screen is so much bigger. I should have done this a long time ago. Battlestar Galactica would have looked a lot better.
Watching Dr Who now. I started with the first episode of the new series. I've seen two episodes so far. I've kind of known about Dr Who, but I've never really watched it, although I did see the Dr Who TV movie in 1996.
I'm not sure if I will watch the whole series, since I believe there are more episodes than there were of BG, and that took me a whole year, but we'll see.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-91238208454276611202012-02-29T16:53:00.002-08:002012-02-29T16:57:20.511-08:00386 days later...Wow, I can't believe it's been over a year. I guess I should have expected this blog to go the way of 99.9% of all other blogs out there. Sorry I missed Groundhog day this year, but hey, it's Leap Day today, that's pretty cool!

To followup on last year's post, I decided to go with Battlestar Galactica, and am almost finished. I'm going to turn to Dr Who next.
Didn't get the iPhone though, got an Android, but I'm still watching Netflix on the iPod touch. Thinking about getting a tablet soon (or a Kindle Fire), to have a bigger screen.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-48129226778365194282011-02-08T13:36:00.000-08:002011-02-08T13:49:56.151-08:00Random musingsWow. Got a ton of hits on Groundhog day. Almost 400 visits. That blows my daily average of a whopping 10 hits per day out of the water. I guess a lot of people wanted to see what old Neddy was doing. Most of the hits came from searches for "Ned Ryerson." Sad to say, I am no longer the first result, but am still on the first page.

Got an iPod Touch last week. I started running on the treadmill again, and was looking for something I could use to watch videos with while running. I've been using my iPod classic, but the screen is so tiny that I can really only watch movies I have seen before, because it's hard to make out any detail. I considered an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy, but they both were too big and expensive for what I wanted.
I didn't realize when I ordered the Touch that you can stream Netflix movies on it. This is the greatest thing ever! No more ripping DVDs and converting to iPod format. Now I have access to Netflix's (Netflixes?) whole streaming library.
It actually arrived on Wednesday the 2nd, so the first thing I watched was Groundhog Day. Thought that was a good way to inaugurate it. Haven't quite finished it yet. Right now I'm running about a half an hour, three nights a week. Will be finished it tomorrow (Wednesday), and then I need to start something else.
I was thinking about watching a TV series that I haven't seen. My thoughts right now are:

Firefly (I have already watched the first 2 episodes)

Battlestar Galactica (yes, it's true, I have never seen this show. I'll turn in my geek card now)

Dr Who (see comments for Battlestar Galactica)

Let me know in the comments (I keed, I keed! No one even reads this, let alone leaves comments) what your thoughts are.

I have to say, the iPod Touch is like a gateway drug to an iPhone. I have been thinking about getting a new phone sometime late this year, and was considering an Android phone, but my new toy is pushing me over closer to the dark side. I like a lot of the things it can do, but I'm confined to the house with the wifi. Being able to use more of the features anywhere I want would be pretty cool. Most of the apps are better than the Blackberry versions (which is what I have now), and the games are beyond better. (There really are no good games on Blackberry).
So when the time comes, I may be getting an iPhone instead of an Android. We'll see. (Definitely not getting another Blackberry. That ship has sailed.)Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-5172381127072300992011-02-02T08:58:00.001-08:002011-02-02T08:58:38.101-08:00Happy Groundhog DayHappy Groundhog Day, everyone!
Bing!Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-39193839503801883172010-08-02T20:37:00.001-07:002010-08-04T21:05:03.493-07:00A few thoughts on Legoland

The maps stink. Literally. I couldn't figure out what the nasty smell I kept smelling was until I stuck my nose in my map and discovered that it smelled like raw sewage.

Most of the rides are designed for 1 parent/1 kid or 2 parents/2 kids. 2 parents and one kid means that one parent will be riding by themself or just watching. Contrast to Disneyland where both parents and the kid can fit in the same seat in most rides.

Miniland is really cool, but seriously needs a maid. A lot of figures and buildings are covered with dust and spider webs. Gross!

We could (and should) have had a better lunch at Karl Strauss across the street for the same price as 2 sandwiches and a drink.

If you have a toddler, go left from the entrance and circle the park clockwise. The age ranges for each section will start young and get older if you go that way. We went right and counter-clockwise, and passed a lot of things that our kid couldn't do.

That is all. Signing off for another 11 months. (Hopefully just kidding there!)Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-42704630330784119212010-04-05T10:04:00.000-07:002010-04-05T10:18:33.822-07:00Hitchhiker UpdateSo I ended up ordering the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Complete BBC Radio Series from Amazon last week. Here is a link (It's not one of those cool links that gives me money if you click on it. I'm not set up to do that - yet).
I also ordered a PS3. They both arrived last Friday (More on the PS3 later - or not).
I've been listening to the Tertiary Phase and have almost finished it. It follows the book (Life, the Universe, and Everything) more closely. In fact, it starts off with Arthur and Ford trapped on prehistoric Earth just like the book does, even though in the radio series, they are rescued during the Secondary Phase by Zaphod Beeblebrox and the Heart of Gold.
So far it's very good. Almost all of the original actors reprise their roles, except for a few exceptions, notably Peter Jones as the book, due to his passing away. The transition to the new voice (William Franklyn) is done very well - the book is having its speech circuits updated and transitions back and forth between Jones and Franklyn during the first chapter.
Have to day, I like it so far. Hope the Quandary Phase and The Quintessential Phase hold up as well, but I'm sure they will.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-91936279643047950132010-03-15T11:09:00.000-07:002010-03-15T13:27:22.559-07:00What do you get when you multiply six by nine? When I was in Jr. High, I had a friend whose older brother like to be called "Ford Prefect" instead of his real name. Apparently the name was some character in a book that he liked. My friends and I thought he was a total nerd.

When I was in High School, we didn't have cable, so there were only about 4 channels we could get on TV. PBS was one of them. One afternoon they were playing The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy. It was British, it didn't make a lot of sense. It turned out that it was the third episode of the series. I watched the rest of the episodes and I liked it well enough.

A few years out of High School, I had a friend who had cassettes of the Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy radio series. He (or a friend of his) had recorded them off NPR. I borrowed them and loved them. I listened to them multiple times. I could quote lines from the entire show. I finally had some inkling why my friend's brother would name himself after one of the characters (Well, not really. Man, what a nerd!).
I never did return those tapes.
I eventually bought all the books and read them several times. I even got Mostly Harmless in hardcover right when it came out.

About 10 years ago, after the tapes had long worn out, I discovered that the radio series was available on CD. They weren't published in the US at the time, and I had to order them from Amazon.co.uk, but I finally got them. I listened to them a lot. I noticed every edit that they had made between the original broadcasts and the CDs (they had to cut a little bit of material for copyright reasons)

Last week, while digging through my car, I found the CDs again. I have been listening to them in the car on the way to and from work. I've also dug out the books, and am in the process of reading them again. Plus, I have re-discovered the original TV series. It turns out it has been in my DVD cupboard for a few years, still in shrink wrap. I don't even remember exactly when I got it.
The radio series is still my favorite. I don't like the TV version's Ford Prefect or Trillian.

Out of curiosity I checked Amazon.com to see if there was anything else Hitchhiker related and discovered that in the last few years, they have made new radio dramas of the remaining books and that there is a CD set containing all of them. Surprise was not enough, and I was forced to resort to astonishment.
Needless to say, I will be ordering them straight away.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-2019068096596954802009-09-30T17:20:00.000-07:002009-09-30T17:23:04.495-07:00The Internets are broken! Our internet access crapped out at home a couple of days ago. I assumed that it was Cox who was at fault. The power light on the cable modem was lit, and the receive light was blinking, which is what happens when the cable is down. TV was working fine. Unplugged the modem and plugged it in a few times, but that didn't fix it.
Yesterday it was still out, so we called Cox and they sent a guy over today. Turns out that the modem is dead. He said that 7 years was a pretty good run for a cable modem.
Going out to buy a new one tonight. Here's hoping for another 7.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-77078210154122924382009-09-14T11:35:00.000-07:002009-09-14T11:39:09.094-07:00Hi EveryoneI often wonder what percentage of blog posts on the internet start with "Sorry for the lack of recent updates." I bet it is pretty high.
In that spirit I would like to say:
I refuse to apologize for the lack of recent updates. I'm busy. I have some ideas. Stuff is coming. It will be great. Seriously? So, I normally look at my blog in Firefox, and I have Adblock Plus turned on, so I don't see the ads.
By the way, the ads are kind of a joke, I just put them on to see if I would get a lot of traffic due to the domain, and if so, would I make any money. So far, I have earned a whopping 3 cents. I think you have to earn $100 to get a paycheck, so I am .03% of the way there.
I happened to open the site in IE and I saw this ad:

From Ned? Ball shaving?
I understand that AdSense uses context to determine what ads to post, and I have a post about juggling balls, but come on!
Of course, I realize that by writing this post, it's only going to get worse. To that, I can only say this:
"Bring it on."Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-73865879109240230832009-07-22T09:27:00.000-07:002009-07-22T09:32:11.511-07:00"We need more monkeys"Just a quick update. Last week LucasArts released The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, which is a remake of the original game, complete with full voice acting and updated graphics. It is a scene for scene remake. One of the cool things about it is that at any point you can press F10 and switch to classic view instantly.
I picked it up last night and played for about 1/2 hour. It's on Steam for $9.99.
I hope they redo Monkey Island 2 also, but I'm not holding my breath.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-21264064079169499652009-07-20T10:23:00.000-07:002009-07-22T09:32:29.565-07:00Of Monkeys and IslandsBack in the days of Point and Click Adventure Games, LucasArts was king. Maniac Mansion, Sam and Max, Full Throttle, The Dig. All of these games were awesome. They were fun, funny, and just the right amount of challenge.
I preferred the LucasArts games to the Sierra Games (Kings Quest, Space Quest, etc...) because there was no way to lose in a LucasArts game. In the Sierra games, if you failed to pick up a certain item somewhere, or talk to the right person, it was possible (and common) to find yourself in an unwinnable situation, and you would have to reload a previous save and try again. In the LucasArts game, that never happened.
The king of LucasArts games was the Monkey Island Series. I actually played the third game first and then went back and bought a collection that included 1 and 2.
Point and Click adventure games are sort of experiencing a renaissance right now. Telltale Games has been creating episodic point and click games for the past few years including a Strong Bad game, and new Sam and Max adventures. They just released episode one of a new Monkey Island adventure, which I played through this weekend. I have to say it's pretty good, but short (I finished it in about 3 or 4 hours), although, since it's only 1/5 of an entire game, that's not too bad.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-41615484984950254642009-07-09T10:43:00.000-07:002009-08-13T16:22:59.344-07:00Playing with my new spheroid objectsWhen I was in 6th grade or so, I took a magic class over the summer. I was actually pretty good at it, and was obsessed with magic tricks. I think at some point, most boys are into magic.
But I'm not here to talk to you about magic. The point is, that the teacher also could juggle, and took the time one day to teach us how to juggle 3 balls. I also was pretty good at that.
I was pretty good with 3 balls, and could also juggle 2 in one hand (right hand only), but could never figure out how to do 4 or more balls.
Until about 2 years ago.
My wife and I went on a cruise, and one of the shows was a juggling act. The guys who did the act had a juggling workshop the next day, and I went to it. There I learned the secret of 4 ball juggling, which I will now expose to the world: 4 ball juggling is just 2 balls in each hand. The balls never switch hands. In fact, that's how all even number juggling works.
Actually, it's not really a secret. Sorry.
The guys on the cruise had these silicone balls that were really cool. My wife wanted to get me a set, so she started looking around. She found this cool website JugglingStore.com that had silicone balls, but they were $35 each. Each!
Instead she got me a set of 4 juggling beanbags, which I used to start learning to juggle 4 balls. Even though she didn't buy anything from JugglingStore.com, she subscribed to their newsletter, and occasionally would forward me their emails if they were having a sale or something.
Last week, I finally decided to get some good balls from them. I found out that the silicone balls weren't really what I wanted anyway, since they bounce (in fact, they are awesome at bouncing, that's what they are for), and if you are not doing bounce juggling, it's better that your balls don't bounce.
I ordered some MB Stage Balls which are hard rubber balls that don't bounce so much and cost way less than the silicone balls. They've also got a lot of other cool stuff like beanbags, hybrid balls, clubs, and a sister site (actually the original site), MagicGeek.com which sells magic tricks, but I didn't order anything else (yet), except for a DVD.
The order came in on Tuesday, and I have been playing with them since then. I like them better than the beanbags. They are larger and heavier, which I think leads to a more consistent throw.
My goal right now is to be able to do some cool 3 ball tricks, improve my 4 ball (I can go about 10 seconds or so before losing it), and to learn how to do 5 ball.
Then I'm going to move on to clubs...
* Post title edited 8/13/09 to keep the perverts from finding my siteJason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-76142505263675856372009-07-02T09:11:00.000-07:002009-07-02T09:23:03.317-07:00LinkarooTo continue my pattern of real articles surrounded by links, today's link is Sluggy Freelance, a truly awesome webcomic. It successfully mixes humor, adventure, sci-fi and just plain wackiness.
Rather than a joke-a-day, this comic is more of a serial, so just jumping right in to today's episode might be confusing, so I suggest you check out the New Viewer Guide to get caught up.
Many people cite That Which Redeems as their favorite chapter, but my personal favorite is Oceans Unmoving. I really like the time-travel elements, the plot twists, and I think that this story shows Bun-Bun at his very best.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-22707109052519018052009-06-29T12:02:00.000-07:002009-06-29T12:01:47.256-07:00Del Mar FairWent to the <del>Del Mar</del> San Diego County Fair this weekend. Every year I'm excited about going, and every year I'm disappointed.
I'm a cheapskate, so we always park at the Horse Park and take the shuttle bus to the fairground. It's free, and I honestly think it's more convenient than paying $10 to park in the fair lot and walk half a mile from your car.
This year's "Crazy food items" (Quotes added for sarcastic emphasis) were the zucchini weenie, (A hollowed out zucchini with a hot dog stuffed inside, battered and deep fried) and the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie chicken sandwich with strawberry jam. Free barf bag included with that one.
I would love to have whoever's job it is to come up with that crap.
I chose instead the monster western sausage and tasty chips. Later my wife and I split a funnel cake. Still too much food for too much money.
When I was a kid I was amazed by all the gadgets that were on sale in the exhibit halls. I don't know if the stuff has gotten worse, or if I just realize that most of it is crap now that I am an adult. I think it's a little of both.
The Boy™ enjoyed looking at the animals. No rides this year though. We thought about taking him on something tame, but he was getting sleepy. Plus I still don't trust rides which are designed to be taken apart by half-drunk carnies and put on the back of a truck in 20 minutes.
Don't get me wrong. I still had a good time. I just always build it up in my mind that it always is going to be more fun than it actually ends up.
Still, can't wait until year. I'm sure it will be great!Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-85403604865757808882009-06-23T09:16:00.000-07:002009-06-23T09:16:03.605-07:00Wild CardsI've been reading a lot of books lately. I tend to be in the middle of several books at the same time. I just finished reading book 2 of the Wild Cards series.
If you're not familiar with it, check it out here on Wikipedia.
I read a lot of comic books in jr. high and high school, and it's an interesting take on the superhero genre.
Of the two volumes I have read so far they both follow the same structure. The book is composed of short stories, written by different authors, but combined together, they tell a complete story.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-69629784900812789092009-06-18T14:04:00.000-07:002009-06-19T07:41:22.400-07:00Link of the WheneverHaven't thought of anything creative to write about, so I thought I'd share another link with you all.
Today's link of the whenever is X-Entertainment
Don't worry, the X does not stand for X-Rated. I've been wanting a PS3 because of the Blu-Ray player, but the wife has wanted a Wii, and really, I just wanted a next-gen system, so I was happy with getting a Wii.
We also picked up Wii Fit at the same time. It's pretty cool. There's definitely a disconnect between the fit test and the actual exercises though. First you weigh in, do some balance tests, and are told that you are way older than you think you are. Then it basically says "Here's a bunch of exercises. Do some of them." Ok, which ones should I do? How many times? How often?
Anyway, the hula-hooping is fun, and I am kind of sore, so it must be doing something. Wii Sports is also fun.
Also, I had no idea that the Wii also played Gamecube games, so that was a total bonus. I also had no idea that it only came with standard video cables, which is a bummer, but I'm not surprised. However, new component cables (yes, we are lame, our TV does not have HDMI) are on the way.Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3115344425281488623.post-1905141510840957322009-06-11T17:35:00.000-07:002009-06-11T17:35:19.929-07:00Sam Horta, you dog!I was whistling some music at my desk today and a co-worker asked if I was whistling the Mork and Mindy theme. It turned out I was.
We started talking about old TV music, and I mentioned that the music for He-Man sounded a lot like the music from Remington Steele.
You be the judge:

He suggested something I never thought of - maybe it was written by the same person.
It turns out that Sam Horta was both the music editor for He-Man and the sound editor for Remington Steele.
Busted!Jason Glorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05141683695801330068noreply@blogger.com0
